How to Write a Great Press Release

- Categories: Advice

You've just finished recording your EP, or filming your music video, and you want to pitch media outlets to promote it on a larger scale? We explain, in this article, how to write a great press release to put all the chances on your side :)

A short introduction that immediately sets the context

The introduction of your press release should be concise and clearly set the context. In a few lines, the media outlet you are pitching should understand the story of your band, who its members are and whether there are any elements that set you apart from other bands. There's no need to write a novel: this section should be concise, direct and effective. It serves to give a clear identity to your project from the very first sentences.

This section can be accompanied by a photo of your band to clearly identify its members!

Then provide more detailed information about your release

Have you worked with well-known people for the mix, recording, mastering or creation of your artwork? Don't hesitate to specifically mention the names of studios, producers, sound engineers or illustrators: these references also lend credibility to your project.

In a few sentences, explain what makes your single, your EP / album, or your music video stand out. What makes it unique? Is there a story behind its creation? An anecdote about the recording or the composition? Any particular influences? Expand on this point! These are elements that allow you to spark your reader's curiosity!

Helping the media place your musical universe

You can also specify the musical influences behind your release, to help the media outlet quickly place your universe. Journalists particularly appreciate editorial angles: a strong theme, a particular context, a story behind the album or the single can make all the difference. The more you make it easy to understand, the more you increase your chances of them taking an interest in your project.

Showing that your project is alive

The end of your press release should not only talk about your current release. Take the opportunity to mention your upcoming news: concert dates, release party, tour, or even an upcoming project in the works. This shows that your band is active, dynamic and built to last.

Don't forget to include links to your social media and add a contact so that media outlets can get back to you if they have any questions!

Taking care of the visual presentation of your press release

Content is essential… but presentation can also make a difference. To stand out among the dozens of press releases received every day, don't hesitate to adapt the design of your press release to your visual universe. Colors, typography, visuals, overall atmosphere: your press release can already reflect the identity of your band or your label even before the media outlet listens to your music.

Releasing a single, an EP or an album? Remember to include the artwork!

If you're not comfortable with layout or the visual side of things, simple tools like Canva can help you structure your press release, choose an effective format and offer a design that catches the eye.

Ready to submit your press release?

Ideally, contact media outlets 2 to 3 weeks before the release of your project. This gives them time to listen, prepare an article, a review or a broadcast if they wish to cover your news. We remind you, however, that promoting your music is a process that can take a lot of time. We can only advise you to be patient and to take into account the fact that you may not get as many responses as you had hoped.
